Transportation Department increases safety meetings
In response to the Chattanooga bus crash incident that occurred in November, Riverside Local School District's Transportation Department will start having regularly scheduled in-services throughout the school year to discuss driver safety, driver distractions and driver attitude.
Previously, the Transportation Department would meet every summer before the school year for an in-service but Transportation Director Lisa Shirkey wanted to be proactive in her department's approach.
"This is to make us better and to take safety seriously," she said. "Our kids are what come first. Chattanooga has brought bus safety to the forefront. We had annual in-services but I want to do regularly scheduled in-services throughout each school year. I think it's important for the bus drivers to have this. They need a forum for them to collaborate and get ideas when they're not sure of what to do about one particular issue. We are spread out as a District and don't have a centralized bus compound to come together to talk about issues."
